So it’s not all doom & gloom after all….
In 2010 the big supermarkets said that sales had been poor because of the recession and disruption from snow and that 2011 would be a better year for them …………
A year on, Sainsbury’s recently said they only grew sales by 2% over December 2010 due to a continuing weak economy; Marks & Spencer said they had got it right, growing sales by a whopping(?) 1.8%, and Tesco admitted that they’d got it all wrong, actually dropping sales by 2.3% over Christmas.
……………meanwhile, in sleepy Stokeinteignhead, that award-winning Community Shop run by just one girl, a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers, and a committee of amateurs – can report a growth in sales in 2011 of (wait for it) ……... twenty-one per cent !!!
So a big ‘thank-you’ to our team of volunteers and all of our supporters!

Did you get your free breakfast? (you had to be a volunteer!)
At a breakfast meeting for volunteers in the Church House Inn in January, we decided that we weren’t going to sit back on our laurels. In 2012 we will aim to make the shop even better, by stocking even more of the products that you want to buy. So please have a good look around the shop shelves and use the suggestion box to give us your feedback, (good or bad) – and especially to let us know of anything that you would buy regularly.
Did you know?
• We sell a great range of beers, wines and spirits at very competitive prices.
• We take debit and credit cards, and offer a small cash-back service
• You can pre-order your favourite magazine and get it before Smiths have it in!
• We stocked over 1,800 products in 2011 – so who needs a supermarket?
• We can place a personalised order for you with local suppliers such as Orsmans’ meat or Jacksons’ Fish - at the same prices that they charge in their own shops!

‘Bring a friend’ scheme
We are encouraging existing volunteers to invite their friends to ‘taster sessions’ in the shop. Volunteers can ‘bring a friend’ to work a trial shift alongside them, to see easy and fulfilling it is, without having to cross the threshold on their own.
Why not give it a try and join our winning team?

Spend to win!
Congratulations to Di Setter who won the most humungous Christmas Hamper ever seen in Stokeinteignhead. Thank you to all of our suppliers and supporters who provided such a great prize. In January the prize was a meal voucher for the London Inn in Shaldon, thanks to their kind donation. Watch out for February’s prize; just spend the minimum amount to be in with a chance, multiple entries are permitted!

Coming soon – wine tasting!
We are planning a wine tasting evening at the Village Hall in March, where the mysteries of oenology will be revealed by a local expert! There will be some nibbles too, and fabulous cheeses from our supplier Taw Valley. This is a chance to support your Village Shop, and an opportunity for you to tell us which wines we should stock in the shop – and even to order some if you wish. Look out for the posters shortly!
