Labrador Bay RSPB Reserve

The RSPB reserve at Labrador Bay, a mile east from Stokeinteignhead, is a well-known beauty spot that not only offers spectacular views over Lyme Bay, but also boasts an abundance of wildlife and rugged coastal walks.

The reserve was acquired by the RSPB in November 2008 to be managed as part of a working farm providing the best habitat for the cirl bunting, a rare bird whose population is almost entirely restricted to South Devon.

Having once had a widespread range in Southern England and Wales, Cirl Buntings suffered a steady decline which continued during the 1970’s when agricultural intensification meant the loss of invertebrate rich grasslands and over winter weed-rich stubbles. In 1989 there were estimated to be a mere 118 pairs of cirl buntings in the UK.

Over the years the RSPB have been addressing the reasons for decline by offering advice and support to landowners within the birds' current range, and promoting sympathetic land management. The most recent survey in 2009 estimates there are now over 860 pairs breeding in the UK.

Labrador Bay not only offers the chance to spot this charismatic little bird in their favoured habitat, but also allows you to explore the network of paths whilst enjoying the stunning views and scenery. Labrador Bay offers a fantastic day out for all the family.
